Gilbert O Sulllivan
Singer/songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan successfully combined a flair for Beatlesque popcraft with an old-fashioned musichall sensibility to emerge as one of the most distinctive and popular new performers of the early 1970s. His song "Nothing Rhymed," became a Top Ten UK hit in late 1970.

Subsequent hits including "We Will" and "No Matter How I Try" followed, and in 1971 O'Sullivan issued his debut LP, Himself; a year later, he finally broke through to the American market with the ballad "Alone Again (Naturally)," which topped the U.S. pop charts. Around this time, the singer jettisoned his so-called "Bisto Kid" image in favor of an endless series of collegiate-styled sweaters embossed with the letter "G." In late 1972, O'Sullivan scored his first British number one with "Clair," falling just shy of topping charts on the other side of the Atlantic; the follow-up, "Get Down," reached number one at home as well, as did the LP Back to Front.

MARMALADE

Scottish band Marmalade had their spell at the top from 1968 – 76, after a tough apprenticeship during the early Sixties when the hits failed to come.

Their eight top ten hits included a number one - a cover of the Beatles' album track Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, in 1968.

The band also made the top three in 1969 with Reflections Of My Life and in 1970 with Rainbow.

Ray Davies
Ray Davies is the lead singer, chief songwriter, and rhythm guitarist in the Kinks, one of the most long-lived of the British Invasion rock groups of the 1960s. In effect, the Kinks have always been merely a backup group for Davies, who writes and sings nearly all their songs with only the occasional contribution from his brother, Dave, who plays lead guitar in the group. At various times, Ray Davies made noises about dissolving the group and going solo, but for years the closest he came to it was taking solo credit for the soundtrack to his 1985 film Return to Waterloo (which he wrote and directed), even though the music sounds as much like the Kinks as that on any regular Kinks record.

Alvin Lee Band
As with many of the other English beat groups of the '60s, Alvin Lee cut his musical teeth in Hamburg, Germany in a band called the Jaybirds. By 1966, back in England, he had changed the name of his band to Ten Years After and was rapidly becoming a major attraction because of the virtuosity of his solo work. Alvin Lee was among the performers of Woodstock.

There is nothing quite so exhilarating as a rock guitarist who knows what he's doing. The electric guitar is an instrument capable of an astonishingly wide range - and Alvin Lee understands it like few ever have.

Tremelose
The band was formed in 1959 but quickly changed the line-up, with Ken Howard transferring from saxophone to bass, Alan Blakely moved to guitar and drums and Dave Munden being recruited for drums. Brian Poole was the lead vocalist by the time Rick West had superseded Graham Scott on guitar.

In 1963, they had a top ten hit with Twist and Shout. This was quickly followed by their No.1 Do you Love Me. After further hits with Candy Man and Someone Someone, the band split in 1967 with Brian Poole moving on to a solo career.

The Tremeloes recorded separately with Len ‘Chip’ Hawkes on vocals and the hits continued. Here Comes My Baby and the No.1 Silence is Golden, also made the top 30 in the US. They are now very successful both in the UK and internationally, creating the original sounds of all their hits.

Roger Chapman
Roger Chapman is the singer best-known in Britain for his work with Family and the 70s r'n'b band Streetwalkers. In the pre-punk era, Roger was an enormous cult figure on the British rock scene, famed for his spectacular showmanship and soaring vibrato. John Peel, the evergreen Radio 1 DJ, vowed that he'd travel colossal distances to catch a Chapman gig. But in the days when 60s musicians were being indiscriminately pensioned off in this country, upstaged by the Sex Pistols and New Wave Music, Roger poured his energies into performing abroad and thus becoming a rock exile.
